Why a chimney gets checked every year
Under NFPA 211, chimneys, fireplaces and vents are inspected at least once a year, and the NFPA's heating safety tips tell homeowners to have chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. A chimney changes between visits even with light use: crowns crack, caps loosen, nests appear and joints open.

The firebox and firebrick
The firebox takes the heat of every fire. Cracked or loose firebrick, open joints and a bulging back wall can let heat reach the masonry and framing behind it.
Each wall and the floor of the firebox get a close look, and our pros tell you what they see. Small joint repairs and a full firebox rebuild are very different jobs, and you get the right one priced.
Metal chimneys and chase tops
The metal chimney above a factory-built fireplace is part of the same listed system. Section R1005.1 of the Florida residential code says factory-built chimneys, listed under UL 103, are installed and terminated according to the manufacturer's instructions.
On a framed chase, our pros check the chase top for rust and slope, the storm collar around the pipe and the cap on top, and they look for signs of water in the chase. One maker's manual calls for the chase top to slope away from the pipe, and a flat, rusting top is a frequent finding.
Nests and animals in the flue
An uncapped flue can attract birds and animals. The chimney swift, a bird that nests inside chimneys, is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which limits what can be done while an active nest is in place.
