Combustion air for the fireplace
A fire needs a steady supply of air. Code section R1006.1 calls for an exterior air supply unless the room is mechanically ventilated so indoor pressure stays neutral or positive, and R1006.2 asks for the intake to be covered with corrosion-resistant quarter-inch mesh.
Where an outside air kit exists, its damper can stick and its screen can clog with lint and leaves. On factory-built fireplaces the air duct must be a listed part of the unit (R1006.1.1). Our specialists clear, repair or replace the parts that belong to your system.
Hearth cracks and settling
A masonry hearth has to carry its own weight on noncombustible support, and code section R1001.9 adds that no combustible material may stay against its underside after construction.
