Factory-built chimneys take the cap listed for them
Many homes have a metal factory-built chimney inside a framed chase, and those systems follow their own rules. Under section R1005 of the Florida residential code, a factory-built chimney is installed and terminated as its manufacturer's instructions direct, and a decorative shroud may go on top only when it is listed and labeled for that specific chimney system.
So a universal cap from a store shelf is the wrong answer for a listed pipe. Our specialists read the chimney's label or paperwork where it can be reached, identify the system and source the termination cap its maker specifies. If the label cannot be found, we explain what that means for the replacement before any part is ordered.
The crown under the cap gets checked too
A new cap sits on or just above the crown, the concrete or mortar top that sheds water off the chimney. Section R1003.9.1 of the Florida residential code wants that top pitched so water runs off, finished with a drip edge, and sealed with a caulked bond break at each flue liner. Cracks there let water into the brick even when the flue itself is capped.
