Metal chimneys and chase tops
The metal chimney above a factory-built fireplace is part of the same listed system. Section R1005.1 of the Florida residential code says factory-built chimneys, listed under UL 103, are installed and terminated according to the manufacturer's instructions.
On a framed chase, our pros check the chase top for rust and slope, the storm collar around the pipe and the cap on top, and they look for signs of water in the chase. One maker's manual calls for the chase top to slope away from the pipe, and a flat, rusting top is a frequent finding.
After a suspected chimney fire
If you think a chimney fire is burning, get everyone outside and call 911 from outside the house. Keep the fireplace unused afterward, even if everything looks normal.
Once the fire service has gone, the chimney should be inspected before it is used again, because intense heat can crack flue tiles and damage the masonry around them. Our pros check the flue, the crown and the firebox and explain what the heat left behind.
Chimneys with more than one flue
Some chimneys carry two or more flues, for fireplaces on two floors or for another heating appliance. Each flue needs to be checked on its own.

Stucco and siding on the chimney
Stucco-clad chimneys and framed chases with siding hide the structure underneath, so cracks, stains and soft spots in the finish are the clues. Stucco can look sound from the ground while the masonry under it is wet, and siding can hide a soft frame.
