The Details Behind a Rebuilt Chimney That Lasts
Every rebuilt chimney carries our workmanship warranty and a clear record of what was done.
Wall thickness in the rebuilt section
New chimney walls go back at a nominal 4 inches or more, built of solid units or of hollow units filled solid with grout, which is the minimum in Florida's residential code.
That figure assumes a flue lining inside. BIA's historical guidance shows that unlined chimneys called for walls twice as thick, which is one reason every rebuilt flue is lined. Thin spots left by earlier patching in the retained section below are pointed out, because the new work rests on them.
Our crew builds the new walls to the code thickness and fills every joint, so the rebuilt section is solid rather than a shell around the flue.
Choosing between clay flue tile and a listed liner
The state code accepts four kinds of lining, namely clay flue tile, a UL 1777 listed lining system, a listed factory-built chimney unit made to sit inside masonry, or another approved material.
In a partial rebuild, the new section usually continues the lining that remains below. When the old lining is damaged along its length, a listed metal liner run from top to bottom can be the better choice.

Rebuilding a chimney that bends
Some chimneys step sideways on their way up. For a fireclay-lined chimney built one wythe thick, the code limits that offset unless masonry underneath carries it in an approved manner.
Inside, clay flue lining is limited to a lean of 30 degrees off plumb, which caps how sharply the chimney can bend. Offsets are measured before any brick comes down, so the rebuilt bend follows the same rules.

Openings in a full-height rebuild
A chimney rebuilt from the ground may need openings that a top rebuild never touches. Florida's residential code requires appliance inlets to enter from the side through a thimble.
It also requires a cleanout no more than 6 inches above the bottom of every flue, with an exception for masonry fireplace flues that can be cleaned through the fireplace opening. Neither opening is needed on every chimney, and we explain which ones apply to yours.
