Why a masonry chimney needs a sound lining
The lining is the smooth, sealed passage that carries smoke and combustion gases up through the brick. The Florida Building Code states plainly that masonry chimneys shall be lined, with a material appropriate for the appliance connected.
When that passage cracks or breaks apart, heat and gases can reach the masonry and whatever sits beside it. The CPSC lists a cracked chimney among the conditions behind fireplace fires.
Our inspection looks at the lining along its length, not only where it can be seen from the damper, so the recommendation rests on the whole flue.
Relining for a fireplace insert or stove
When a stove or insert vents through an existing fireplace, the liner can run continuously from the appliance to the top. Installers either ovalize the bottom of the liner to pass the damper or remove parts of the damper frame and smoke shelf.
The chimney is then sealed at the damper or the top of the smoke chamber, so room air and smoke do not travel around the liner.

Choosing a cap for the relined flue
A cap keeps rain, debris and animals out of the new liner. Where a rain cap is fitted to a masonry chimney, the Florida Building Code sets its net free area at four or more times the area of the flue outlet.
A cap that is too restrictive can hold back the gases the new liner is meant to carry. Caps sold with a liner system are designed around its size.
