Refractory panels in factory-built fireplaces
Factory-built fireplaces are lined with molded refractory panels in place of brick. Fine surface cracks can be normal, and each maker sets out in its manual how wide a crack may get, or how much material may be missing, before a panel has to be replaced.
Our specialists compare your panels with the manual for your model instead of a rule of thumb. Replacement panels come from the maker's parts list for that unit, and they are fitted the way the manual shows.
How a fireplace damper should work
Under code section R1001.7.1, a masonry fireplace needs a ferrous metal damper, set at least 8 inches above the top of the opening and operable from the room. Open, it lets smoke rise. Closed, it keeps room air in and outside air out while the fireplace sits unused.
A good damper opens fully and closes fully without force. Our pros check the plate, the frame, the handle and the linkage, then repair whatever has bent, rusted or broken.
A stuck or rusted fireplace damper
Dampers stick for a handful of reasons, including rust on the plate, a warped frame, a broken linkage or debris wedged on the smoke shelf. Forcing the handle usually makes things worse.
Our specialists free the plate where they can, replace worn linkage and handles, and replace the damper when the frame has rusted through. If a throat damper cannot be saved, a top-sealing damper is another route, and we price both so you can compare.
How far the hearth has to reach
The hearth extension protects the floor in front of and beside the opening. Code section R1001.10 calls for 16 inches of it ahead of the opening and 8 inches to each side; when the opening is 6 square feet or larger, make that 20 inches ahead and 12 inches per side.
