Cracks a repellent cannot bridge
Brick Industry Association guidance is direct about this. Penetrating repellents seldom stop water through cracks more than 0.02 inch, or half a millimeter, wide. Anything wider stays a path for rain after treatment.

When the chimney already carries a coating

Why the product has to breathe
