The chase cover and the chimney cap are separate parts
A framed chase is the box, usually sided like the rest of the house, that encloses the metal chimney pipe of a factory-built fireplace. Sheet metal closes the top of that box, and that piece is the chase cover. The chimney pipe passes up through an opening in the cover, and a listed termination cap sits on the end of the pipe.
Because the parts are separate, each one can fail on its own. A cover can rust through under a sound cap, and a cap can be damaged on a sound cover. We identify which part is letting water in before recommending replacement, so you pay for the repair the chimney actually needs.
Where the chase sits on the house
Factory-built fireplace instructions describe more than one way to enclose the chimney. The manual for one widely sold series shows a fireplace and chimney enclosed in an exterior chase, a chimney offset through an exterior wall into a chase, and a chase built on the roof.
The cover is the same kind of part in each case, but the water paths around it differ. A chase on the roof also depends on the flashing at its base, while a chase on an outside wall depends on the siding and on the junction where the roof meets it.
