The chimney lining systems the code accepts
Florida's residential code names four routes for lining a masonry chimney: clay flue tile made to ASTM C315, a lining system listed and labeled to UL 1777, a factory-built chimney listed for installation inside masonry, or another approved material that resists flue gases and condensate.
For relining an existing chimney, a listed metal system is often the practical choice because it can be lowered from the top. Clay tile is more often part of new construction or a rebuild.

Chimneys that hold more than one flue
Some chimneys carry two or more flues side by side. The Florida Building Code requires masonry wythes at least 4 inches thick between adjacent flue linings, with an exception for flues venting only one appliance.
When one flue in a multi-flue chimney is relined, the partition beside it matters as much as the new liner. A cracked wythe can let gases pass between flues. Each flue in a shared chimney is sized and relined for its own appliance.

Connecting a liner to an open fireplace
In an open masonry fireplace, the liner usually starts at the top of the smoke chamber. The instructions we follow seal the gap there with a ceramic blanket plug or a base plate and sleeve, with the liner kept centered.
That seal keeps smoke inside the liner instead of letting it spread into the old flue around it. Clay liners in new construction likewise start at the top of the smoke chamber under the Florida Building Code.

Finishing the top of a relined chimney
The top of a liner system usually includes a top plate that seals the flue opening, a storm collar and a cap. Instructions we follow set the plate in a bead of high-temperature silicone and trim the liner flush with the collar.
Those parts are made for the liner they come with. Mixing a cap from one system with a liner from another is not part of a listed installation.
