Old brick, stone and tile that are still sound are worth keeping, even when they look tired. Cleaning and repointing often bring them back, and new material never quite matches the old.

Why strong acid stays off the brick
Unbuffered muriatic acid is a common shortcut for cleaning brick, and industry guidance warns against it. Mixed too strong or left too long, acid can etch the brick face, eat into the mortar and leave burn marks that are harder to fix than the soot.
Light-colored brick can also react to acidic cleaners with yellow or green stains. Our specialists choose cleaners made for the brick in front of them and test before using them across the face.
Raking out the old joints by hand
Repointing only holds when the new mortar goes deep enough. Preservation Brief 2 calls for removing old mortar to a depth of two to two and a half times the joint width, plus any loose material behind it.
The same guidance names hand chisels and mash hammers as the least damaging tools. Our specialists rake joints by hand on older and softer brick, where a grinder can widen the joint and chip the brick edges.
Hearth size in a restored fireplace
Some older hearths were built shorter than today's code allows, and others were cut back when floors were changed. Code section R1001.10 sets the extension at 16 inches in front and 8 inches at each side, or 20 and 12 inches for larger openings.
