Removing failed patches

Hard gray cement over soft old brick, caulk in firebox joints and painted-over soot are signs of quick fixes. Some of those patches trap moisture, and hard cement can crack the softer brick around it.

Our specialists remove failed patches carefully, by hand where the brick is fragile, and redo the joint or the surface with suitable materials. Anything that comes out is shown to you and explained.

Bringing an old damper back into service

Code section R1001.7.1 calls for a ferrous metal damper that works from the room, set at least 8 inches above the opening. Years of rust and disuse can seize the plate, warp the frame or break the linkage.

Our specialists clean, free and adjust a damper that is still sound, and replace the handle, pivots or linkage where needed. When the frame has rusted through, a new damper is the honest recommendation.

Keeping a restored fireplace in shape

A restored fireplace stays that way with a little care. Burn dry, well-seasoned wood, keep a screen in front of an open fire and keep anything that can burn well back from the opening, as NFPA's safety guidance advises.
