One wood-burning appliance per flue

Liner instructions allow only one solid-fuel heater to connect into a flue, and that flue may not be shared with gas or oil appliances. A wood stove and a second appliance each need their own passage.

The Florida Building Code adds that the space around a chimney liner shall not be used to vent any other appliance. Running a second connector into the old flue beside a new liner is not allowed.

Metal factory-built chimneys are a different system

Not every chimney is masonry. Many fireplaces use a factory-built metal chimney hidden inside a framed chase, and those systems are installed and serviced according to their own listing.

Masonry relining products are generally not made to be installed inside a factory-built chimney. One major liner maker allows it only in a narrow case outside the United States. Factory-built fireplaces are listed and labeled under Florida's code and installed to that listing.

Signs the existing lining has failed

A lining in trouble often shows itself below. Pieces of clay tile in the smoke chamber, gaps between tiles and heavy deposits packed into cracks are all reasons to look further.

Other signs are less direct, such as a flue that suddenly drafts poorly or an inspection note about open joints between tiles. None of these can be judged from the hearth alone. A flue that has sat unused for years deserves the same look before its first fire.

Questions to ask before choosing a liner quote

Relining quotes are easier to compare when each one answers the same questions. The liner material alone says little about the job.

• Which fireplace or appliance is the liner sized for, and what size was chosen?
• Is cleaning of the existing flue included before installation?
• Does the liner listing require insulation, and is it included?
• How will the bottom of the liner be connected and sealed?
• Which top plate, cap and crown seal are included?
• Will the liner be labeled with its date and intended use?
