The wood you burn shows up in the flue
EPA Burn Wise advises burning only dry, split, well-seasoned wood, dried for at least six months, and never trash, cardboard, painted or treated lumber, plywood or driftwood. Wet wood burns cooler and smokier, and that smoke leaves more residue in the chimney.

An open flue lets rain fall straight onto the smoke shelf and damper, where it mixes with soot and ash into a smelly sludge and speeds up rust. Damp deposits are also harder to brush out cleanly.
