What Goes Into Installing a Wood Fireplace

Chimney pipe rated for wood fires
Wood fires produce hot exhaust, and the chimney has to be built for it. Section R1005.3 of the Florida residential code requires factory-built chimneys serving solid-fuel appliances in homes to meet the Type HT requirements of UL 103, and to be marked Type HT and Residential Type and Building Heating Appliance Chimney.
That marking is on the pipe itself. Our pros confirm it, along with the fireplace maker's list of approved chimneys, before anything is ordered. The chimney rising through your house in Balm is then the one the fireplace and the code both call for.
Support for the chimney and the roof framing
A fully assembled factory-built chimney is heavy. Florida's residential code, section R1005.5, requires joists, rafters and other members that support it to be designed for the added load. For factory-built units, section R1006.1.1 requires the air duct to be a listed component installed per the fireplace instructions.
