Replacing cracked or loose firebrick

Fine hairline cracks in firebrick are normal with use and are not always a problem. A brick split through, one that moves when pressed or one with a chunk missing is different, because the wall behind it loses its protection.

Our team cuts out the damaged brick, cleans the opening and sets new firebrick in refractory mortar so it sits flush with its neighbors. When too many bricks have failed, relining the back or side wall becomes the sounder repair, and you see both prices side by side.

Glass doors on the fireplace

Glass doors have to suit the fireplace they are mounted on. Accessories for masonry fireplaces are installed to their listing and the maker's instructions (R1001.13, UL 907), and a factory-built fireplace can take a gasketed door only if its own listing allows one (R1004.5).

Electric fireplaces are a different repair

Nothing burns in an electric fireplace, so what fails is electrical or mechanical, from heaters and fans to flame effects, controls and cords. Makers such as Dimplex tell owners to plug the unit straight into a wall outlet and never into an extension cord.
