Restoration starts inside the firebox. Firebrick takes the direct heat, and over the years joints erode, bricks crack and the panels in factory-built units can split. A few cracked bricks can be replaced and the joints refilled with refractory mortar made for that heat, while a firebox with widespread failure may need rebuilding. We tell you which applies before quoting.

The damper comes next. A rusted plate, a broken handle or a damper that has stopped sealing lets air-conditioned air slip up the flue while the fireplace sits idle, and one that sticks can make a fire hard to manage. The old damper can be repaired, or replaced with a top-sealing damper that closes the flue where it ends above the roof.

The hearth and surround are what you see every day. Cracked tiles, loose stone and stained brick can often be repaired or cleaned without replacing the whole face. If you want a new look, we explain which materials suit the area around a firebox and what clearances the fireplace requires, so the new finish does not create a problem later.

Behind the visible parts, the smoke chamber and flue carry heat and smoke out of the house. We check them for deposits, cracks and gaps during the inspection, and a restoration plan includes any repair they need before the fireplace goes back into use. For a gas or electric unit set into an old opening, the plan covers the appliance as well.
