The brick around the liner still has a job
A metal liner carries the gases, but the masonry around it holds the liner, supports the top plate and keeps weather out. The Florida Building Code sets a 4-inch nominal wall thickness for masonry chimney walls.
One major liner maker's instructions set a similar minimum for the masonry shell before its liner can be installed. A thin or damaged shell is a problem the liner cannot solve on its own.
We look at the brickwork, the joints and the crown alongside the flue, and tell you if any of it needs attention first.
Condensation inside a relined flue
Flue gases carry water vapor. If the flue surfaces are cold enough, that vapor condenses and runs down the inside of the liner.
Liner instructions explain that household chemicals from paints, thinners and detergents can combine with that condensate to form aggressive acids. Correct sizing and insulation keep the flue warmer and limit the problem. Liner makers also suggest bringing outside combustion air directly to the appliance where its instructions allow.

Chimneys that hold more than one flue
Some chimneys carry two or more flues side by side. The Florida Building Code requires masonry wythes at least 4 inches thick between adjacent flue linings, with an exception for flues venting only one appliance.
When one flue in a multi-flue chimney is relined, the partition beside it matters as much as the new liner. A cracked wythe can let gases pass between flues. Each flue in a shared chimney is sized and relined for its own appliance.

Relining after a chimney fire
If the chimney is on fire, leave the house with everyone and phone 911 once you are outside. Liner instructions say the fire department should be notified right away about any fire inside a liner.
Afterward, the chimney should not be used until a qualified person has inspected it and it has been cleaned or repaired. Flue fires can damage a lining in ways that cannot be seen from the room.
