Hearth size in a restored fireplace
Some older hearths were built shorter than today's code allows, and others were cut back when floors were changed. Code section R1001.10 sets the extension at 16 inches in front and 8 inches at each side, or 20 and 12 inches for larger openings.
A restored fireplace that will burn wood should have a hearth that protects the floor. Our specialists measure yours and explain how an extension can be added in a material that suits the original.
Original trim and today's clearances
Wood trim and shelves on older fireplaces were not always placed with today's clearances in mind. Under the exceptions to code section R1001.11, combustible trim stays at least 6 inches from the opening, and where it sits within 12 inches, it can stick out no more than 1/8 inch for each inch it is from the opening.

Old tile on the surround and hearth
Decorative tile gives many older fireplaces their look, and it cracks with heat, settling and the occasional dropped log. Loose tile can often be reset, and a few broken pieces can be replaced.
