Sizing a liner for a stove, insert or other appliance
When an appliance is connected, its instructions and the venting codes set the flue size. The Florida Building Code also keeps a chimney flue at least as large in area as the appliance connector.
Liner instructions add that the appliance outlet should not be larger than the liner at its narrowest point unless a qualified person has sized the liner to suit that appliance. Two appliances that look alike can still call for different flue sizes.

Clearance between the chimney and wood framing
Masonry chimneys inside the house or within an exterior wall keep a 2-inch airspace to combustible framing under Florida's code, and chimneys standing entirely outside keep 1 inch.
There is an exception for chimneys fitted with a lining system listed and labeled to UL 1777 for use in contact with combustibles, installed to its instructions. On older homes, that exception can matter. Some older homes have framing or subfloor tucked tight against the brick, which is why the check matters on relining jobs.

Chimney height and the new liner
A liner cannot fix a chimney that is too short. Florida's code wants the top at least 3 feet above its roof penetration and at least 2 feet above anything on a building within 10 feet of it.
Liner instructions for wood-burning use repeat the same height rule. A chimney that falls short may draft poorly no matter what lining it has. BIA's residential chimney note ranks height and flue area above every other factor in chimney design.

Details that help before the liner inspection
A few details make the relining visit faster. The make and model of any stove or insert, the fuel you burn and any recent inspection report all help us plan.
