Decorative shrouds and custom chimney tops
A shaped copper or painted shroud can change the look of a whole roofline, and some homeowners want one for that reason alone. On a masonry chimney, the shroud still has to leave the open area and screen the code asks for. On a factory-built chimney, section R1005.2 allows a decorative shroud only when it is listed and labeled for that specific chimney system.

A hot wood fire can lift embers out of the flue, and without a screen they land wherever the wind takes them, on shingles, in gutters or on dry plants. A spark arrestor is a cap with mesh sized to hold those embers back while smoke passes through. NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys and fireplaces, addresses spark arrestors, and the Florida residential code sets the mesh limits.
If you burn wood, our pros recommend a screened cap and fit it so the mesh stays clean and removable. If embers are landing on the roof or in the yard while a fire burns, get everyone outside and call 911 from outside first. Once everyone is safe, call us to arrange a visit.
