Heater output, the flame effect and the size of the viewing area also vary by model, so compare them against the room before choosing. Power is the first practical question. Some units plug into a standard outlet, while larger models with heaters may call for a dedicated circuit. The manufacturer's requirements get checked against the outlets already in place, and if a new circuit is needed, the estimate names who handles that electrical work.

For a recessed unit, the framing, the clearances listed by the manufacturer and the finish around the opening all matter. The wall is built or adapted to fit the unit, with access left for later service, following the installation manual. For an insert, we check the old firebox and close off the flue if it will no longer be used, so conditioned air does not escape and rain does not come down.
