Repointing open joints inside the firebox
Joints that have eroded while the brick stays firm can often be raked out and refilled instead of relining the whole firebox. The old material comes out down to sound mortar, the joint is cleaned and dampened as the product maker directs, and fresh refractory mortar is packed in and struck flush.
Repointing only works while the brick itself is solid. If bricks are cracked through, loose or badly eroded, patching the joints around them just delays the bigger repair, and our pros will say so before quoting.
Refractory panels in factory-built fireplaces
Factory-built fireplaces are lined with molded refractory panels in place of brick. Fine surface cracks can be normal, and each maker sets out in its manual how wide a crack may get, or how much material may be missing, before a panel has to be replaced.
Our specialists compare your panels with the manual for your model instead of a rule of thumb. Replacement panels come from the maker's parts list for that unit, and they are fitted the way the manual shows.
When the opening and the flue are out of step
A fireplace draws best when the passage above the firebox, through the throat, damper and smoke chamber, is at least as large as the flue, as code section R1001.6 requires, and when the flue is sized to the opening under R1003.15.
A fireplace that has been altered, with a larger opening, a new firebox or a different damper, can end up out of proportion and smoke at the face. Our specialists measure the opening and the flue and explain whether a repair, a smoke guard or a change to the firebox will help.
Ash dumps and cleanout doors
Some masonry fireplaces have an ash dump in the firebox floor and a cleanout door below it, outside or under the house. Doors rust shut, frames crack loose and dump covers go missing.
