Fitting a round liner into a narrow flue
Some chimneys have a flue too tight for a round liner of the required size. Flexible liners can be ovalized to fit, and the manufacturer notes that this reduces their cross-sectional area.
An ovalized liner therefore has to be checked against the sizing rule after shaping. A liner that fits the gap but falls below the required area has only moved the problem.

Relining a chimney with a bend in the flue
Many flues change direction on their way up. The Florida Building Code limits how far a masonry chimney may offset, and clay liners may slope no more than 30 degrees from vertical.
Flexible liners are made for that kind of route, and the instructions allow extra length for each offset. In tight bends, installers guide the liner down with a rope and a cone instead of forcing it.

Liners for gas appliances follow their own code path
Gas appliances sit on a separate code path. Florida's residential code sends their flue lining to the fuel gas chapter instead of the general masonry rules. The appliance listing sets the vent type and size.
Liner instructions note that liners serving gas appliances do not require insulation between the liner and the masonry, although performance improves with it. A flue that once served wood may be the wrong size for a gas appliance, so the existing flue is never assumed to suit it.

Older chimneys built without a lining
Some older chimneys were built with no flue lining at all. BIA's historical chimney guidance shows that an unlined chimney called for an 8-inch nominal wall, twice the thickness of a lined one.
Today the Florida Building Code requires masonry chimneys to be lined. An unlined flue is therefore a question to settle before the fireplace is used again. Relining is often the simplest way to bring such a chimney up to that requirement without rebuilding it.
