The screen under the cap
If your masonry chimney has a spark arrestor, its mesh size comes from section R1003.9.2 of the Florida residential code. The screen must stop anything larger than half an inch across while letting anything under three eighths of an inch pass, and it must be accessible and removable for cleaning.
A screen clogged with soot or debris can restrict the draft, and one with holes rusted through no longer keeps embers in or animals out. Our pros check both and note whether the screen can be cleaned or should be replaced.
Factory-built fireplaces and their labels
A factory-built fireplace is a tested, listed unit. Section R1004.1 of the Florida residential code requires it to be listed and labeled and installed according to its listing, and the listing standard is UL 127.
Our specialists look for the label, identify the model where they can and check the firebox panels, the doors and screens, the air openings and the connection to the chimney. Replacement parts and changes must fit that listing, and we tell you if anything does not.
