Finishing the top of a relined chimney
The top of a liner system usually includes a top plate that seals the flue opening, a storm collar and a cap. Instructions we follow set the plate in a bead of high-temperature silicone and trim the liner flush with the collar.
Those parts are made for the liner they come with. Mixing a cap from one system with a liner from another is not part of a listed installation.
We install the matching top parts and show you the finished top, so you know what is sealing your chimney.
Ending a new liner inside a masonry crown
Some relined chimneys finish in a masonry crown with a short clay tile at the top. In that detail, the instructions call for the liner to reach at least four inches into the tile, with a listed rain cap fitted to the tile.
BIA's residential chimney guidance adds that the flue liner should stand at least two inches above the top of the cap.

Choosing a cap for the relined flue
A cap keeps rain, debris and animals out of the new liner. Where a rain cap is fitted to a masonry chimney, the Florida Building Code sets its net free area at four or more times the area of the flue outlet.
A cap that is too restrictive can hold back the gases the new liner is meant to carry. Caps sold with a liner system are designed around its size.

Keeping the new liner centered and clear
A liner that rests against one side of the flue loses the even insulation or airspace around it. Instructions allow spacers along the liner to keep it centered while the insulation is placed.
After poured insulation goes in, the installer checks that none has fallen inside the liner. Anything left inside narrows the passage the liner was sized for. A centered liner also lets the top plate and cap sit square on the chimney.
