Rebuilding the section above the roof
The part of the chimney above the roof is usually the first candidate for rebuilding because it has no shelter at all. Taking it down to the roofline, or a few courses below it, often reaches sound masonry.
The rebuilt section then meets the roof at the flashing, which has to be renewed with it. A rebuild that stops above the roofline still needs its flashing checked where old and new brick meet.

A cap on the rebuilt flue
Rain, leaves and animals all stay out of a capped flue. The code also sets a size rule for rain caps on masonry chimneys, with open area under the cap of four times the flue outlet area or more. A cap chosen for the old flue may be too tight for a new one.
A rebuild is the right time to fit a cap sized to the finished flue, rather than reusing one made for a different opening.
We include a cap on every rebuilt flue and show which one on the estimate.
Fireblocking where a chimney passes floors and ceilings
Gaps where a chimney passes a floor or ceiling are closed with noncombustible fireblocking, fastened firmly, under the state code. Where the gap meets wood joists, the code lets the fireblocking sit on metal strips or lath laid across the space.
A full rebuild that reaches inside the house has to put that fireblocking back. Missing fireblocking lets fire and smoke travel along the chimney between floors. Where missing blocking is spotted beyond the rebuilt section, we point that out as well.
Our crew notes the fireblocking at each level the rebuild reaches and restores it as the chimney goes back up.
No change in chimney size at the roof
The code does not let a chimney or its flue lining change size or shape within 6 inches above or below where it passes through a floor, ceiling or roof.
That matters when a rebuild changes the chimney's footprint at the top. Any step in or out has to happen well clear of the roof line. The rule applies to the flue lining as well as the outer brick, so both are planned together.
