Firebrick and the mortar between it
The lining of a masonry firebox is firebrick, a dense brick made to handle direct flame. Florida's code for homes (R1001.5) wants that firebrick to conform to ASTM C27 or C1261 and to be set in medium-duty refractory mortar that meets ASTM C199, keeping each joint to a quarter inch or less.
Ordinary masonry mortar in those joints tends to crumble after a season of fires, and wide joints give heat an easy path into the wall behind. When our specialists repair a firebox, the brick and mortar match the code's materials and the joints stay tight.
Finding the model on your fireplace
Factory-built units carry a rating plate or label naming the maker and model, usually somewhere around the opening or behind a lower grille. With that name, the correct manual, panels, grate and replacement parts can be tracked down.
If you have the manual or the builder's paperwork, keep it handy for the visit. If not, our pros find the plate, note the model and look up the maker's instructions before recommending any part.
The steel lintel over the opening
A lintel, usually a steel angle, holds up the brick above a fireplace opening. Code section R1001.7 calls for a noncombustible lintel with at least 4 inches of bearing on each end.
Steel that rusts grows in size, and that growth can crack the joints above it, push brick out of line or let the angle sag. Brick industry guidance (BIA Technical Note 19) recommends leaving room at the lintel ends so the steel can expand with heat. Our specialists check the angle, its bearing and the brick it carries before deciding between cleaning and coating it or replacing it.
Glass doors on the fireplace
Glass doors have to suit the fireplace they are mounted on. Accessories for masonry fireplaces are installed to their listing and the maker's instructions (R1001.13, UL 907), and a factory-built fireplace can take a gasketed door only if its own listing allows one (R1004.5).
