Why the corners need extra care
The four corners of a chimney are where flashing has to change direction, and they are the hardest part to form. Brick Industry Association guidance has the base flashing start on the faces that run down the slope, with tabs folded around each corner so the next piece laps over them.
A corner cut square and filled with sealant has nothing behind the sealant once it cracks. Our specialists form or fold corner pieces so metal covers metal, then seal the laps. That detail takes longer, and it is the one that keeps a corner dry through storm after storm.
Laps that point the right way
Flashing is laid the way shingles are. Each higher piece goes over the lower one, so water always crosses a lap from the top and keeps moving. Technical Note 19B asks for at least two inches of lap where flashing is installed in sections, with the higher piece over the lower.

Flashing on a stucco chimney
Stucco chimneys need the same two layers of flashing as brick ones, and the counter flashing has to meet the stucco in a way that sheds water off the finish instead of trapping it behind. Cracked stucco just above the flashing can be a sign that water has been getting in there.
