Slope that moves rain off the cover
A chase cover should not be a flat sheet. The same manufacturer's manual calls for the chase top to slope downward, away from the pipe opening, and gives a minimum pitch of a quarter inch per foot for its system. Water that runs off quickly has less time to work on seams and fasteners.
When a cover sags or was installed flat, water collects in the middle and around the collar. We measure the chase and order a cover shaped to drain toward the edges, then check the finished pitch after it is fastened. A cover that sheds water also stays cleaner of leaves and grit.
Keeping the chase dry while a cover is made
Because covers are fabricated to measure, there is a gap between the measuring visit and installation. If water is getting in, keep the fireplace out of use and move anything valuable away from the wet area below. Do not climb onto the roof to tape or tarp the chimney yourself.

Wide chases on a sloped roof
Water running down a roof collects against the upslope side of anything wide that stands in its path. To turn that water aside, Florida's residential code requires a cricket, also called a saddle, on the uphill side of a chimney or penetration wider than 30 inches, measured across the slope.
When a wide chase on a roof leaks near its base, the cover may not be the only concern. We check whether a cricket is present where one is needed and explain any roofing work separately from the chase cover itself.
Chase covers over a gas fireplace vent
Some chases enclose the vent pipe of a gas fireplace instead of, or alongside, a wood-burning chimney. That vent has its own listed termination and its own manufacturer's instructions, and the opening and collar in the cover have to suit it.
We identify each pipe that passes through the cover before a replacement is ordered. The cover is then made to fit around every vent and chimney in the chase without changing how any of them terminates.
