Rear vent or top vent

Many direct-vent units ship from the factory with a rear vent that the manual allows to be switched to a top vent. A rear vent suits a fireplace on an outside wall, while a top vent allows a vertical rise before the pipe turns outside or goes up through the roof.

Venting through the roof

A vertical vent rises through the ceiling and roof and ends in a cap set at the height the manual requires. The roof penetration uses the vent maker's roof piece and storm collar, sealed to that system's instructions.

Facing materials around the opening

The surface right around the fireplace opening usually has to be noncombustible, and the manual defines what that means for the model, typically materials such as tile, stone, brick, steel or cement board.

Our pros check your chosen facing against the manual before it is ordered. Tile, stone and trim that sit outside the noncombustible zone still follow the model's clearance rules. A product sold as heat resistant is not automatically noncombustible, so the manual's definition is the one that counts.
