A chimney chase is the framed box that encloses a factory-built chimney from the roof up, finished with siding or stucco so it reads as part of the house. Inside it runs a listed metal chimney pipe, installed as its manufacturer's instructions direct under section R1005.1 of the Florida residential code. The chase keeps weather off that pipe, but it is built from wood studs, sheathing and cladding, and those materials rot when water gets in.
