The chase cover and the chimney cap are separate parts
A framed chase is the box, usually sided like the rest of the house, that encloses the metal chimney pipe of a factory-built fireplace. Sheet metal closes the top of that box, and that piece is the chase cover. The chimney pipe passes up through an opening in the cover, and a listed termination cap sits on the end of the pipe.
Because the parts are separate, each one can fail on its own. A cover can rust through under a sound cap, and a cap can be damaged on a sound cover. We identify which part is letting water in before recommending replacement, so you pay for the repair the chimney actually needs.
What rust streaks on the siding tell you
Rust-colored streaks that start at the top of the chase and run down the siding come from corroding metal above. They usually point to the cover, though rusting fasteners and a tired storm collar can leave marks too. Once rust is washing off the metal, the cover is losing material every time it rains.
Replacing the cover stops new streaks. The existing stains are a separate question, and some siding cleans up better than others. We tell you what to expect before the work starts rather than promising a spotless wall.
Keeping the air space around the pipe open
Factory-built chimneys are installed with a required air space between the pipe and anything combustible. The manual for one widely used system calls for a two-inch clearance to combustibles and building insulation around its chimney. That space has to stay open when a chase top is replaced.
While the cover is off, we look down into the top of the enclosure for insulation, debris or nesting material pressed against the pipe. Anything that does not belong there is noted and removed where it can be reached safely, and deeper problems inside the chase are explained on the estimate.
