A clogged cap screen can choke the draft
The screen on a chimney cap catches sparks, and over time it also catches soot and creosote until the openings close up. Florida's code sets a minimum net free area for a spark arrestor screen, four times that of the flue outlet, because a screen that is too small or too clogged holds back the draft.
When the cap can be reached safely, our sweeps clean the screen as part of the visit and check that the cap is still fastened. A bent or rusted cap on your Palma Ceia chimney is noted, and replacement is quoted only if you want it.
