A television over the fireplace
A TV above a gas fireplace is a popular layout, and it only works when the heat rising off the unit stays within what both the fireplace maker and the TV maker allow.
Our pros check the model's instructions for anything mounted above it, including recesses, shelves and wall finishes, and explain the options before you choose a unit. Some models are designed with that layout in mind.
Power for ignition, fans and controls
Many gas fireplaces need electrical power for electronic ignition, fans, lights or remote receivers. Makers call for the unit to be wired and grounded to local codes or NFPA 70, and at least one notes that spark ignition can interfere with a TV on the same circuit.
New wiring or a new circuit is a job for an electrician, and our estimate names that work. Our pros plan the receptacle or junction box location to the manual.
Access for future service
Controls and access panels have to stay reachable, because a gas fireplace needs occasional service. The fuel gas code (section 604.2) adds that panels, grilles and access doors removed for normal servicing must not be attached to the building.

Vent-free units are a different job
Vent-free gas fireplaces release their exhaust into the room and come with their own rules on room size and use. They are a separate product with separate requirements.
