Stucco Repair That Starts Behind the Finish

Corroded lath behind the stucco
Metal lath and the fasteners that hold it can rust when water gets behind the stucco, and wood lath can rot. Either way the stucco loses its hold, which is how a wall that looked fine can start to crack and bulge in one area.
The Florida residential code calls for corrosion-resistant lath and attachments on exterior plaster. When our pros find rusted lath on your chimney, it is replaced with corrosion-resistant lath before new stucco goes on, and the estimate shows how much was affected.
Why lath stays off sound masonry
It can seem sensible to add metal lath under a patch on a block or brick chimney, but Preservation Brief 22 advises against it on sound masonry. Lath fastened to masonry can rust over time and crack the stucco and masonry around it.
Our pros bond repairs on masonry chimneys directly to clean, sound block or brick, the way the original stucco was applied. Lath is used where the backing calls for it, such as a framed chase.
Elastomeric coatings and what they can do
Manufacturers such as Sto make elastomeric coatings that bridge hairline cracks, flex with small movement better than ordinary paint and resist wind-driven rain, and some are made to let water vapor pass so they do not blister. Those properties vary by product.
Our specialists recommend an elastomeric finish only over stucco that is sound, since no coating reattaches loose stucco. We name the product in the estimate and follow its preparation and curing instructions.
When full restucco makes sense
Replacing all of a chimney's stucco is a bigger job, and the Park Service reserves it mainly for stucco that has lost its bond over a large area or has been compromised by poor earlier repairs. Many chimneys need less than that.
Our pros recommend a full restucco only when the tapping map and the test openings show it is needed. When it is, the old stucco comes off down to the backing, the lath and paper are checked and the new stucco goes on in full coats.
