The chimney lining systems the code accepts
Florida's residential code names four routes for lining a masonry chimney: clay flue tile made to ASTM C315, a lining system listed and labeled to UL 1777, a factory-built chimney listed for installation inside masonry, or another approved material that resists flue gases and condensate.
For relining an existing chimney, a listed metal system is often the practical choice because it can be lowered from the top. Clay tile is more often part of new construction or a rebuild.
We explain which of these routes suits your chimney and why, so the recommendation is tied to the code and the appliance.
Liners for gas appliances follow their own code path
Gas appliances sit on a separate code path. Florida's residential code sends their flue lining to the fuel gas chapter instead of the general masonry rules. The appliance listing sets the vent type and size.
Liner instructions note that liners serving gas appliances do not require insulation between the liner and the masonry, although performance improves with it. A flue that once served wood may be the wrong size for a gas appliance, so the existing flue is never assumed to suit it.

Keeping the new liner centered and clear
A liner that rests against one side of the flue loses the even insulation or airspace around it. Instructions allow spacers along the liner to keep it centered while the insulation is placed.
After poured insulation goes in, the installer checks that none has fallen inside the liner. Anything left inside narrows the passage the liner was sized for. A centered liner also lets the top plate and cap sit square on the chimney.

A new liner still needs regular sweeping
Relining does not end maintenance. Liner makers note that creosote or soot can build up in any venting system and should be removed to reduce the risk of a flue fire.
The CPSC recommends having flues and chimneys inspected before each heating season for leakage and blockage. A smooth liner is easier to sweep, but it still collects deposits. Sweeping also gives a regular chance to check the top plate, the cap and the bottom seal.
