Throwing water clear of the rebuilt brick
Water that runs off the crown and down the face soaks into the new brick. A drip edge on the crown, which the code requires, sends it clear of the face instead.
Where the crown does not overhang, BIA suggests corbeling the last two courses out to form a drip. The code limits how far each course may step out, which keeps the corbel stable. A drip that works keeps the face of the new brick noticeably cleaner over the years.

A cricket behind a wide chimney
A cricket is required by the state code on the uphill side of a chimney measuring more than 30 inches parallel to the ridge, unless the chimney meets the ridge itself. The cricket is a small ridge that splits water around the chimney.
Without one, water and debris collect behind the chimney and sit against the brick and flashing. The code has the cricket flashed and counterflashed like any other chimney joint.
If your chimney needs a cricket and has none, we include it in the rebuild plan.
Rebuilding a chimney that bends
Some chimneys step sideways on their way up. For a fireclay-lined chimney built one wythe thick, the code limits that offset unless masonry underneath carries it in an approved manner.
Inside, clay flue lining is limited to a lean of 30 degrees off plumb, which caps how sharply the chimney can bend. Offsets are measured before any brick comes down, so the rebuilt bend follows the same rules.

Rebuilding the outside and the flue together
New brick on the outside says nothing about the flue within. A damaged lining stays damaged unless the rebuild deals with it directly.
When the top is open, the flue is easy to reach, so the rebuild is the moment to replace damaged tiles or run a new liner. Leaving a damaged flue inside new brick wastes the opportunity. Doing both at once also means the new crown is built around the finished flue rather than cut open later.
