Repointing open joints inside the firebox
Joints that have eroded while the brick stays firm can often be raked out and refilled instead of relining the whole firebox. The old material comes out down to sound mortar, the joint is cleaned and dampened as the product maker directs, and fresh refractory mortar is packed in and struck flush.
Repointing only works while the brick itself is solid. If bricks are cracked through, loose or badly eroded, patching the joints around them just delays the bigger repair, and our pros will say so before quoting.
Finding the model on your fireplace
Factory-built units carry a rating plate or label naming the maker and model, usually somewhere around the opening or behind a lower grille. With that name, the correct manual, panels, grate and replacement parts can be tracked down.
If you have the manual or the builder's paperwork, keep it handy for the visit. If not, our pros find the plate, note the model and look up the maker's instructions before recommending any part.
Spark screens and mesh curtains
A screen in front of an open fire stops sparks and rolling embers from reaching the floor, and NFPA's heating safety guidance recommends a sturdy screen for that reason. Mesh curtains tear, rods bend and pull chains break with years of use.
