Fitting a round liner into a narrow flue
Some chimneys have a flue too tight for a round liner of the required size. Flexible liners can be ovalized to fit, and the manufacturer notes that this reduces their cross-sectional area.
An ovalized liner therefore has to be checked against the sizing rule after shaping. A liner that fits the gap but falls below the required area has only moved the problem.

Insulating a liner for a wood-burning fireplace
Liners that serve wood-burning fireplaces and stoves usually need insulation to meet their listing. One manufacturer requires at least one inch of a poured insulation mix, or a half-inch ceramic blanket, to meet UL 1777 at zero clearance.
That insulation is part of the listed system, not an optional extra. Leaving it out can leave the installation outside the conditions it was tested for. A poured insulation mix also holds the liner steady once it has set.

Keeping the new liner centered and clear
A liner that rests against one side of the flue loses the even insulation or airspace around it. Instructions allow spacers along the liner to keep it centered while the insulation is placed.
After poured insulation goes in, the installer checks that none has fallen inside the liner. Anything left inside narrows the passage the liner was sized for. A centered liner also lets the top plate and cap sit square on the chimney.

Relining the flue or repairing the tiles
Not every damaged lining needs a full liner. A few cracked tiles near the top can sometimes be repaired, while damage along the length of the flue usually points to relining.
The deciding factors are where the damage sits, how much of the flue it affects and what the appliance needs. A repair that leaves the flue undersized or still leaking is not a saving. Where damage is limited to the top few tiles, the tile repair and any crown work are often done together.
