The steel lintel over the opening

A lintel, usually a steel angle, holds up the brick above a fireplace opening. Code section R1001.7 calls for a noncombustible lintel with at least 4 inches of bearing on each end.

Steel that rusts grows in size, and that growth can crack the joints above it, push brick out of line or let the angle sag. Brick industry guidance (BIA Technical Note 19) recommends leaving room at the lintel ends so the steel can expand with heat. Our specialists check the angle, its bearing and the brick it carries before deciding between cleaning and coating it or replacing it.

When the opening and the flue are out of step

A fireplace draws best when the passage above the firebox, through the throat, damper and smoke chamber, is at least as large as the flue, as code section R1001.6 requires, and when the flue is sized to the opening under R1003.15.

A fireplace that has been altered, with a larger opening, a new firebox or a different damper, can end up out of proportion and smoke at the face. Our specialists measure the opening and the flue and explain whether a repair, a smoke guard or a change to the firebox will help.

Repair the fireplace or replace it

Many fireplaces are well worth repairing. Replacement starts to make sense when a factory-built unit has failed panels, a rusted-out firebox and discontinued parts all at once, or when a masonry firebox needs rebuilding along with its hearth and damper.
