Why fireplace makers require a chase top
Factory-built chimney makers write the chase top into their installation instructions. The installers manual for one widely sold wood-burning fireplace series states that a chase top must be used in a chase installation, that it may be built in the field and that it must be made of noncombustible material.
Under Florida's residential code, a factory-built chimney is installed, and ends at the top, exactly as its manufacturer's instructions describe. In practice, a replacement cover should follow the same details the chimney maker describes. We read the fireplace label where it can be reached and follow the instructions for that system.
A raised collar around each pipe opening
Where the chimney pipe passes through the cover, a raised collar keeps water on the cover from running down the opening. One manufacturer specifies a collar two inches tall, soldered, welded or spun so it has no open seam. A flat hole with a bead of sealant around it is not the same detail.
We check the height and condition of the existing collar before quoting. A replacement cover is ordered with each collar located over its pipe, because a collar that sits off center crowds the pipe on one side and leaves a wide gap on the other.
Chase covers for more than one chimney pipe
Where two factory-built fireplaces share a chase, the cover carries two openings and two collars. Each chimney has its own manufacturer's instructions for termination height and spacing, and the cover must not push either pipe out of position to line up with a hole.
We record the location of both pipes and their caps before the cover is ordered. If the existing layout raises a question about spacing or height, we explain it on the estimate rather than hiding it under new metal. The aim is a chase top where each system still meets its own instructions.
