How high the flue tile should stand
In Brick Industry Association Technical Note 19B, the flue liner stands at least 2 inches proud of the top of the masonry cap. That gap keeps water on the crown away from the tile's open end and gives a chimney cap something solid to grip.
Older crowns sometimes bury the tile or leave it flush. When our pros rebuild one, the new crown is formed around the tile at a proper height where the tile allows it, and if the tile top is chipped or cracked, you hear about that before the forms go on.

The top courses of brick sit directly under the crown and take whatever water it lets through.
