How We Track Down a Chimney Leak

The joint where the flue tile leaves the crown
Where the flue tile rises out of the crown there should be a flexible joint, so the tile and the crown can move separately. Brick Industry Association Technical Note 19B also calls for the flue liner to extend at least two inches above the crown.

Using the fireplace during a leak
Wet masonry, a rusted damper or loose debris in the flue should be checked before the next fire, and a fire will not dry out a leaking chimney. Rust flakes or debris on the grate are another sign the flue should be looked at from the top before any fire.
