Bringing an Old Fireplace Back, Done Properly
Here is how our local pros clean, repoint and rebuild a neglected fireplace.
Mortar that suits the old brick
New mortar in an old wall should give way before the brick does. The National Park Service's repointing guidance (Preservation Brief 2) calls for repointing mortar that is softer than the brick and no harder than the original mortar.
A modern high-strength mix can look fine at first and then crack the edges of older brick as the wall moves. Our pros match the mortar to the brick in front of them, which matters as much as matching the color.
Raking out the old joints by hand
Repointing only holds when the new mortar goes deep enough. Preservation Brief 2 calls for removing old mortar to a depth of two to two and a half times the joint width, plus any loose material behind it.
The same guidance names hand chisels and mash hammers as the least damaging tools. Our specialists rake joints by hand on older and softer brick, where a grinder can widen the joint and chip the brick edges.
Replacing damaged face brick
A face brick that has cracked through, crumbled or broken at the corner can be cut out and replaced without disturbing its neighbors. The hard part is finding a brick that matches in size, color and texture.
Our specialists look for the closest match available and, where possible, take replacement brick from less visible spots. They show you the match before setting it, so there are no surprises on the face.
Stopping the water before the finish work
Water stains, efflorescence and rust inside a fireplace usually mean water is entering higher up, through the top of the chimney, a missing cap or the masonry. Restoring the face while water keeps coming in would waste the work.
