Naming the stain before cleaning it
Soot, rust, old sealers, paint, efflorescence and scorch marks each respond to a different treatment. Treating them all the same way can set one stain while removing another.
Our pros sort the stains on your fireplace into those groups and plan the cleaning in the right order. You see which marks should come out fully and which will fade without disappearing, before any cleaner touches the face.
Matching mortar color and texture
Mortar color comes mostly from its sand, and fresh mortar dries lighter than it looks when wet. That is why a match is judged on dry samples, a practice the Park Service's repointing guidance also describes.
Our pros mix trial batches, let them dry and compare them with the existing joints before repointing the visible face. You approve the sample, so the finished fireplace looks like one piece.
Bringing an old damper back into service
Code section R1001.7.1 calls for a ferrous metal damper that works from the room, set at least 8 inches above the opening. Years of rust and disuse can seize the plate, warp the frame or break the linkage.
Our specialists clean, free and adjust a damper that is still sound, and replace the handle, pivots or linkage where needed. When the frame has rusted through, a new damper is the honest recommendation.
Restoring the lintel over the opening
The steel angle over the opening carries the brick above it, and code section R1001.7 calls for at least 4 inches of bearing at each end. Rust swells the steel, and the growth can crack joints, push brick forward or let the angle sag.
Brick industry guidance (BIA Technical Note 19) recommends room at the ends of a steel lintel for heat expansion. Our specialists clean and coat a lintel with surface rust, and replace one that has lost section, resetting the brick above it.
