Repointing compared with face grouting
Repointing means cutting out deteriorated mortar and packing new mortar into the joint. BIA calls it the generally recommended method because it suits a wider range of joint damage than face grouting.
Face grouting is a lighter repair for hairline cracking only. Once joints have eroded, crumbled or opened up, grout alone does not rebuild them. Grouting also leaves the old mortar in place, so it only suits joints where that mortar is still hard and holding firmly to the brick.

Stepped-out courses near the top of the chimney
Many chimneys have one or two courses near the top that step out slightly. BIA explains that when a crown does not overhang, the last two courses can be corbeled out to form a drip, throwing water clear of the face below.
Florida's residential code limits each corbeled course to half the brick's height or a third of its bed depth, whichever is less.
When those courses are loose or cracked, we reset them to the original projection and check that the drip still works.
Water repellents come after sound masonry
A water repellent is not a masonry repair. BIA advises against water-repellent additives in mortar because they can weaken the bond to the brick, and prefers breathable repellents applied after construction when repellency is needed.
Applying any treatment over cracked brick or open joints only hides the problem for a while. BIA's efflorescence guidance also warns that coating masonry without stopping the cause of the moisture may lead to degradation.

White bloom on the chimney after repair
White deposits sometimes appear on fresh masonry as the mortar dries. BIA's efflorescence note calls bloom on work less than a year old new building bloom, which generally fades as the masonry dries. Bloom that appears later or keeps returning points to water still moving through the masonry.
BIA advises finding and fixing the water entry before cleaning persistent deposits, otherwise they come back.
