Flashing under the crown on some chimneys
Some chimney designs place a sheet-metal flashing directly under the crown, running beyond the inner face of the brick and bent up against the flue liner, so any water that gets through the crown is turned out of the chimney. Brick Industry Association flashing guidance shows this detail, and under a cast-in-place crown the flashing can also act as the bond break.

Patching a broken crown edge
A crown that is sound across the top but has lost a piece at one corner can sometimes be repaired locally. The loose material is cut back to solid concrete, the area is cleaned and a repair material suited to crown work is built up to the original profile, with the drip edge carried through the new edge.

Crowns on stucco-covered chimneys
On a masonry chimney finished in stucco, the crown also protects the top edge of the stucco. When the crown leaks or its overhang is too short, water gets behind the stucco at the top and shows up lower down as cracks, stains or hollow spots.
