Vented gas fireplaces come in two broad groups. Units tested to ANSI Z21.88 are gas fireplace heaters, meant to warm the room, while units tested to ANSI Z21.50 are vented decorative fireplaces, chosen mainly for the flame. The fuel gas code (sections 604.1 and 605.1) ties each type to its standard and to the maker's instructions.

If you want real warmth on cool evenings, a heater-rated model makes sense. If the fireplace is mostly for looks, a decorative unit may fit better. Our specialists read the rating plate with you before you decide.

Horizontal vent runs and their pitch

Horizontal sections of vent pipe are not always installed dead level. Each system sets its own rule for pitch and support, and those rules come straight from the manual for the model.

Our specialists follow that rule on every horizontal run, support the pipe at the spacing the manual calls for and keep the required clearance between the pipe and nearby framing.

Vent-free units are a different job

Vent-free gas fireplaces release their exhaust into the room and come with their own rules on room size and use. They are a separate product with separate requirements.
