Gas fireplaces in bedrooms and small rooms
The fuel gas code limits appliances in bedrooms, bathrooms and closets (section 303.3). Among the exceptions are direct-vent units installed to their listing and the maker's instructions, and some vented fireplaces in rooms large enough to meet the code's air-volume rule in section 304.5.

Clearances to framing and finishes
Minimum clearances to combustible framing, sheathing and finishes are listed for every gas fireplace, around its sides, top and front. Those numbers belong to the model, and two units that look alike can have different ones.

Does the fireplace need a hearth
Whether a gas fireplace needs a hearth or floor protection in front, and how far it must reach, comes from the manual for the model. Some raised installations need none, while others call for a noncombustible surface in front.
Our specialists read that requirement before the floor and finishes are planned, so a hearth can be built in or left out for the right reason.
Power for ignition, fans and controls
Many gas fireplaces need electrical power for electronic ignition, fans, lights or remote receivers. Makers call for the unit to be wired and grounded to local codes or NFPA 70, and at least one notes that spark ignition can interfere with a TV on the same circuit.
